While convenient, QR codes can be a security risk as they can be easily manipulated by cybercriminals. A malicious QR code might lead you to a fake website designed to steal your personal information, like login credentials or credit card numbers, or even install malware on your device. These codes are often placed in public locations, like on parking meters or flyers, to trick unsuspecting users, a practice known as "quishing."
To protect yourself:
Always inspect the physical QR code for signs of tampering, like a sticker placed over the original.
Before you click to open a link, always check the URL preview that appears on your phone's screen after scanning to ensure it's a legitimate, secure website.
